Essence of the Soul
The 200 hour training opens with Essence of the Soul. The immersion is designed to help you create a personal spiritual practice that is built on love and trust—the yogic way to physical health, mental clarity and divine awareness. The program includes an introduction to foundational principles of yoga, meditation practice, breathing techniques and more.
Philosophy, Lifestyle & Ethics Description
The 200 Hour program exposes students to yogic history and philosophy, as they apply to the daily experience of a balanced physical, mental and spiritual existence. The philosophy of yoga is discussed as a perspective from which to view the experiences on life’s journey. Studies include an overview of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and their application to balanced heart based living. Other aspects of yogic practices such as mindfulness, chanting and meditation are also emphasized.
These studies of yogic guidelines provide the yoga teacher with a context and code of ethics, which supports both actual instructions as well as provides a touchstone for a business code of ethics.
Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the asana experience as they learn to lead students in basic and intermediate asanas with verbal instructions, breath coordination, lines of energy, variations, props, modifications and assists. The practices of pranayama (science of breath,) meditation and chanting will be introduced to enrich the students as well as provide them with the skill to lead these practices as they might relate to a yoga class. Classes are designed with lectures, workshops and the opportunity to practice leading asanas.
Anatomy & Physiology Description
The A & P portion is designed to familiarize students with fundamentals of physical anatomy and physiology. Special attention is paid to the interrelatedness of the systems within the body with heavy emphasis on key muscular and skeletal structures affected during asana practice. Students will learn the physical benefits of Hatha yoga with a special focus on the therapeutic aspects of the asanas including the conditions they may be indicated and contraindicated for.
Human energy systems and subtle bodies such as chakras, nadis, bandhas are also studied to help students become aware of how the systems operate, the impact they have on daily life and the roles they play in a yoga practice.
Teaching Methodology Description
Drawing on components covered in Techniques, Philosophy Lifestyle and Ethics and Anatomy and Physiology this module expands into the broader aspects of teaching a class. Included are learning different ways to lead a posture, designing a class, creating flow, creating a supportive environment for self and students, adjusting for a class’ specific needs, observing and staying connected with the class and assisting/correcting. Students are encouraged to understand and develop their own unique gifts and style as they consider the qualities of a teacher. The business perspectives in the form of marketing, safety, insurance and legal considerations are also discussed.
All students are required to student teach a total of 10 hours at some point during training. The practicum may be divided into class segments or taught as a complete class as long as the total time equals 10 hours. A portion of this practicum should be completed during the break. Students will be responsible for having someone (a participant) initial their time sheet. Also, a minimum of 2 hours practice is to be completed assisting other apprenticeship students during a regular yoga class.
In the ancient traditions of yoga, seva (service) is considered essential to the path of the yogi. Students will select some form of seva either to the SOUL community or to another organization and will be ask to journal their experiences.

The Soul of Yoga Institute teacher training absolutely transformed me on many levels. I came into it desperately needing clarity and healing in my life, and came out of it with a deeply renewed faith in myself and a solid sense of inner strength. This training is beyond learning to become a yoga teacher—it is about getting into the heart, truly healing and reconnecting with our Divine Essence, and learning to lead a life of love and devotion.Laura Swan, Encinitas, CA

Soul of Yoga Institute gave me a stage to unlock and hone my soul’s expression within a safe, sacred, and supportive environment. Soul of Yoga teacher training is a doorway into soul-centered living. The rewards are immeasurable!Russ Liechty, San Diego, CA
Soul of Yoga teacher training for me was a spiritual awakening. My life and my passion for yoga has propelled into a desire for greater connection to Source and Spirit. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper spiritual awareness!Caroline Andrews, Encinitas, CA
i am (beyond words) appreciative of my training that i received from you and the rest of the team at Sundara. The experience on every level prepared me to just dive in here! i didn’t realise that i was going to get thrown into the high-speed lane with my teaching here and if i had done my training anywhere else… i wouldn’t have been prepared for it!
All of the technical training and studies were profound and also being exposed to so many different teaching modalities from the master teachers their at Soul was invaluable. But truly, the biggest thing that prepared me was how the Sundara training turned me inside-out… allowed me to face my deepest darkest parts of myself and transmute the energy to walk at a level of love & light (and hold it!) that wasn’t available to me prior to my training with you! i am eternally grateful to you that i am able to live my life’s purpose at a whole new level!diZa Wilde, Liverpool, England
