What makes Iyengar Yoga unique is its emphasis on precision alignment which changes the most basic asana into a challenge. The use of props created by BKS Iyengar has revolutionized the industry and gives students support in poses that can’t be done as smoothly when practiced independently. The Intelligent use of corrections to guide the kinesthetic body and proper sequencing gradually builds one towards an apex pose and then a cool down to integrate and balance the previous actions. This sets the nervous system and brain up to experience a higher frequency of consciousness than a random assortment of poses thrown together.
The resemblance of Iyengar Yoga to the Bolshoi Ballet has to do with a well trained teacher who holds the student to a high degree of accountability, not letting half-hearted and incorrect movements take place without drawing attention to it with insightful suggestions on how to improve one’s performance.
