The nature of pregnancy itself is a yogic state. The profound union between mother and baby naturally shifts a woman’s attention inward. This is reflected in Yoga as women draw into themselves, unifying the breath with the body and mind.

I love to hear the moms-to-be set up their props for class and talk about “how much they need this.” Practicing yoga during their pregnancy helps them realize how it helps with the physical aspects of their body’s changes and they come to recognize the importance of closing off to the rest of the world so they can focus on themselves and their growing babies.

Being pregnant and practicing yoga gives the moms access to the awareness of the abundant life force within, something that is not talked about very often.

Some of the other benefits of yoga during pregnancy are:
•    Increases overall strength, flexibility, and postural alignment
•    Reduces low back pain and sciatica
•    Enhances balance during a time of shifting in the center of gravity
•    Opens the chest which reduces aches and fatigue in the thoracic and cervical regions of the spine and helps with breathing
•    Reduces swelling and inflammation around the joints
•    Aids in digestion
•    Help prepare for the physical birth
•    Healthy physical and emotional outlet
•    Connection with other pregnant women

How prenatal yoga can help during labor:
•    Soothe and empower moms to find their own inner rhythm
•    Facilitate the labor process
•    Helps with stamina
•    Improves their physical comfort
•    Learn to use the tools of meditation and visual imagery
•    Become familiar with the concept of vocalization
•    Use the muscles of the pelvic floor effectively

Throughout gestation, the mother and baby are biologically one unit. The baby is dependent upon the health, nourishment and love of the mother. Participating in a group prenatal class provides a community of support from people who understand and honor what the mother is feeling. It is the opportunity to connect to the wisdom of the ancestors and to learn to let go and trust the process.
